| OUR STORY (Home) We are Veterans from the City of Pickering. We have been a "not for profit organization" since The Year of The Veteran 2005." |
| We originally began as a group of Veterans from various wars, especially WW11 who were members of the South Pickering Seniors’ Club. We changed our name and location on December 29th 2007 and are now known as “The Pickering Veterans’ Association” which allowed us to grow and include City of Pickering Veterans. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month to enjoy refreshments and the fellowship of our comrades. Our intention was to have the older Veterans be able to meet with the younger Veterans and hopefully we will conquer this difficult plan. The problem being that the younger Veterans have to work during the day and our older Veterans' meet during the daytime. We are canvassing and advertising in our local newspapers and newsletters in an attempt to locate veterans returning from Afghanistan, or those that have contributed in a humanitarian/peacekeeping capacity in various missions throughout the world, in service to their country. We have a club named “The Pickering Veterans Association,” which presently consists of WW11 veterans and we have recently seen expressed interest in expanding our club to include veterans returning from Afghanistan. We are inviting veterans to join us once a month at the Pickering Recreation Centre to share comadarie. We will meet separately from the WW11 division and we expect the club will be a two staged effort. The first stage would consist of informing the community that we are prepared to volunteer our time to take part in “not for profit organizations,” while contributing in various events to create exposure for the Pickering Veterans Association and it’s endeavour to make a positive impact on the community. The second stage would be more of a therapeutic nature, in that we can benefit by sharing our experiences. We also endeavour to have guest speakers at our meetings to discuss various subjects, primarily those which address the impact of war on a soldier and the stresses of reintegration following return from duty. As the “Pickering Veterans Association, Past and Present” we endeavour to keep the name “Veteran” alive in the community in respect of those that have served in wars previous and present, and in remembrance of those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We also look forward to sharing time with our WW11 Veterans throughout the year and sharing their experiences. If you know of any Afghanistan veterans or you are a veteran that has served overseas, please contact “The Pickering Veterans Association” President, Elsie Hetherman @ 905 839 9507 or visit our website at www.pickvets.com. |
